A man, who bases his future objectives on past experiences, will end up destroying their own dreams. The Roaring Twenties a time of partying, spending money, and lavish life where anybody and everybody was having the best time of their lives. An example of these extravagant times was in the the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Who shows that money can corrupt a person s relationship with others. Set in Long Island a town called West Egg in the 1920s, the novel The Great Gatsby shows how relationships have a big meaning in what people s lives are really about. It turns the characters into only caring about money and their social status. Money controls their every move, and with just a glimpse into the life of luxury they†¦show more content†¦Like anybody we always want to be by the most popular and rich people and that s how people were towards Jay Gatsby. However Nick Carraway saw different in him. He moved into West Egg, and the two linked. Not because Jay Gats by was rich, because they both saw ways they could help each other. Nick started to figure out how Gatsby wasn’t the man he and others talked about and didn t have the most luxurious past as many people thought. â€Å"Gatsby was born James Gatz on a North Dakota farm, and though he attended college at St. Olaf’s in Minnesota, he dropped out after two weeks, loathing the humiliating janitorial work by means of which he paid his tuition. He worked on Lake Superior the next summer fishing for salmon and digging for clams† (Fitzgerald 103). Figuring this out about Jay Gatsby Nick thought he was still a genuine person although the stuff he has figured out about him. Nick was truly Gatsby’s friend but it was complicated. Jay Gatsby’s true love was Daisy Buchanan and Nick being her cousin Jay Gatsby saw an opportunity to get closer to the love of his life essentially using Nick to get closer to Daisy. Nick saw things in Jay Gatsby that many people didn ’t see in him. because unlike others they were only his friend for money. Like all relationships they must come to an end. The small Canadian settlement was organized in 1899, and in the â€Å"achieved City status on September 1, 1913.† The city is known for many things, one of which being their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team the Weyburn Red-Wings. The 2016 age distribution revealed that 22.4% of the population ranged from 0-17 years old (2430). Continuing on 58.6% of the population lands between the ages of 18-64 (6370), while the rest of the population at 19% within the age of over 65 (2065). Anyway, with all the statistics related to the city of Weyburn another factor to look at is the violent and the property crime of the city. In order to get into the details of crimes, one must know why people commit a crime. Now in the specifics of why people commit property crime, as well as violent crime. In regards to property crime, there are two basic theories, first of which being Rational Choice, and the second being Routine Activity. Rational Choice is defined as â€Å"a principle that assumes individuals make prudent and logical decisions [that] provide people with the greatest benefit given the choices available.† The theory of Routine Activity is defined on USlegal.com as â€Å"for a crime to occur, 3 elements must be involved. Motivation to commit the offence, A vulnerable victim who is available, and Insufficient protection to prevent the crime. † Thus in summary two ways to explain the cause of crime, are related to first the benefit of risk/reward, and also the opportunity factor of committing a property crime. In regards to violent crime, these criminals can be placed in specific group-like personalities. As explained by Paul G. Mattiuzzi, co author of â€Å"the Everything psychology book,† violent criminals can be qualified in many groups, one example of which being the Traumatized criminal. The traumatized criminal fits as â€Å"agresssion occurs in response to a single massive assault on their identity, and the essence of their existence will be destroyed if they do not respond.† This person is one who has suffered a tragic event, and they feel it a necessity to respond to their abuser. Another example would be the obsessive personality. As Mattiuzi explains the obsessive is â€Å"immature and narcissistic individuals who demand. or crave attention and affection. Violence would happen because ‘if I can’t have her, nobody can.† Thus the situation in regards to an obsessive criminal would be one who commits violence in the name of possessing what they are terrified they might lose. When one looks at both the violent, and the property crime rate over a lengthy period of time they need a source to accomplish such research. In looking first at Violent Crime you will notice that the numbers have remained largely similar throughout the years. Now what one can get from this is that the numbers largely range from a lowest total of which being in 2016, and the highest total 2013 at 296. This unit was staffed with members of the Weyburn police service with the RCMP and was housed in the Weyburn police service building. The Unit was tasked with intelligence gathering and combatting the increasing prevalence of organized crime in South East Saskatchewan. With the creation of this group there was a noticeable impact in the details of violent crime as the amount of incidents dropped from 196-184. As explained by the Moose Jaw police chief Rick Bourassa â€Å"the police have dealt with more than 1000 incidents of unlawful firearm use in Saskatchewan between 2012-2016.† Thus this policy that Weyburn created was influenced by the city of Moose Jaw. Using the data that Weyburn had, with another example such as Regina who ran the policy in 2017 and â€Å"during that time collected 157 firearms.† Another way to notice trends in crime and how the results are affected By acts of criminality is to check crime statistics from sources to make sure you understand the crime trends of your city. As stated on Weyburn review â€Å"After years of reductions, the crime severity index for the city of Weyburn saw increases in both violent and nonviolent categories.† Through these realizations they were able to determine how those numbers increased in 2016. As Chief Stafford states â€Å"the change in serious incidents came from 3 primary incidents that occurred in 2016. Our serious assaults were up 40%, weapon charges were up 50?†. Thus what this article concludes that extra incidents of criminal activity have led to a spike in violent crimes committed in 2016 were the increase in overall criminal activity. Another way to view crime is through that of property crime. As explained in the info on violent crime, for property crime in order to analyze that stats on Weyburn property crime from 2000-2016. As the FBI states property crime covers â€Å"burglary, larceny theft, and arson. The object of the the offence is taking money or property, but no force or threat of force against the victims.† As seen in the table below the results of the crime rates are as follows. Now unlike the section of violent crime these results can be solely based off of the data. As one can see, property crime was at its highest in 2001, which the city population is stated at 9534. The results however take a massive dive to 2011 when the number is down to 580, where after a brief spike the number in 2016 of property crimes is seen at 402. In regards to the statistics that would be provide logic to why the amount of crimes went down first we look at police action. The most blatant example of evidence of a drop in crime relates to the year 2011. As explained by Discover Weyburn â€Å"We have seen a reduction in property crime which really helps to reinforce that weyburn is a safe city to live in.† One of the policies that similarly happened amongst that timeframe involve extra funding for the weybirn police force. As stated on publications.gov public safety and policing approved to enter into agreement, on behalf of the government of Saskatchewan, substantially in the form of attached Schedule A, with the Weybum Police, the government of Saskatchewan agrees to provide$200000 for the period of April 1 2011 to March 31, 2012 to continue the organized/serious crimes task force program and the Enhanced community policing program in the City of Weyburn. Thus one can make the logical assumption that the funding for the organized for the purpose of the organized crime task force was part of the reason the numbers dove as much as they did. Another way to analyze this is by viewing the economic data to see why the people would commit crimes in the property sense As previously stated one of the methods used for property crimes were the Rational theory, which as stated on investopedia â€Å"assumes that individuals always make prudent and logical decisions that provide them with the highest amount of personal utility. These decisions provide people with the greatest benefit given the choice available.† Now a reason that would fit the narrative of advancing personal utility would be that they don’t make enough money that stealing from another source would be the most beneficial way of them collecting money. Since there was a large drop of property crime in 2011 it should be important to know why that is. As explained in discovery weyburn â€Å"In december 2011 the average weekly earning in the province were up by 3.3% compared to 1 year prior.† Now how to explain this would be stated in HuffingtonPost as it states â€Å"Saskatchewan’s economy grew 4.8% (yearly average) from the previous year, thanks to strong export demand for its natural resources.† Another example where this takes place is in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. The total amount of property crimes in 2010 for Prince Albert was â€Å"3552† and in 2011 that number dropped to â€Å"2922† A reason for the massive growth in Weyburn is twofold. First is due to a major increase in household income. As stated on Weyburn economic development â€Å"Average household income in Weyburn is much higher than the national average at 16%, with Lloydminster and Estevan the only compatibles.† Also another explanation is through growth in resources as well as a growth in the population. AS previously stated Weyburn’s population rose in the 2011 census to â€Å"10484, a growth of 11%. Reward Mark-it-Down Co Ltd In todays competitive climate lots of business owners are trying to get more from their workforce at the same time however their employees are trying to get more from their Jobs. Reward and recognition programmer are one way that employers can motivate their staff into changing their key behaviors and work habits, thus benefiting the business. At the same time these schemes can also give the employee that little bit extra they are looking for from Job. Motivation and reward are closely linked and there have been many credible theories Ritter on the subject. It is widely recognized that human beings have a need to feel valued, both in their home lives and in the work place. To keep people motivated they need to be encouraged, rewarded (where appropriate) or recognized in their endeavors. One of the most valued of the motivation theories was written by Abraham Moscow from the USA back in the sasss. As part of his study into motivation Moscow developed a five tiered hierarchy of needs. He argued that the way to motivate individuals in the workplace and indeed in life is to satisfy the need sets one by one and in order. The first of the need sets and the most basic are the biological and physiological needs. Goals: These are long term ambitions that should relate to the individual aims for progressing within the company. Targets: These are the steps taken in order to achieve the goal. There is an acronym that can act as a guide for the criteria that any targets should adhere to. They should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound. There is little point setting targets outside of these parameters. Monitoring progress towards identified goals and objectives as a way of determining who deserves reward does have its pros and cons though. On the one hand it can be noninsured an easily measurable method of monitoring performance, but on the other (particularly when the goals and targets have been set for a team or group) it could be argued that the fact that a company/team or individual is achieving its set goals and targets is not a true indication of who has made the most effort towards making that happen and as such is not an effective method for identifying who should qualify for reward. This is an important thing to consider when applying motivation and reward schemes, as an incorrect or ill managed monitoring technique could be costly to a business. For example a company will not want to be handing out cash bonuses to a whole team for reaching a set goal if it transpires that 3 out of 5 team members have made no improvement to their work output and had nothing to do with the teams progress or achievement! When considering target setting as a way of monitoring progress and establishing where reward, praise or recognition should be given, serious thought should be given to how the company plans on pinpointing exactly who has been responsible for progress, both positive and negative. Benchmarking Another way to monitor company performance is to measure its successes and allures against those of other businesses in the same market. This method is known as bench marking and its all about taking the best practices of the highest achieving businesses in the same market and applying them back in the business in question. The following two methods can be used to evaluate the Jobs of the individuals n question in order to assess whether theses concerns are Justified or not. Job Ranking Job ranking is one of the simplest methods of Job evaluation. Its considers the Job as a whole and ranks it against another whole Job within the organization. This is usually carried out by the raters comparing the Jobs using their general knowledge of the roles themselves. The Jobs are ranked in order of the difficulty of the Job itself or the importance of the role to the company. The procedure is followed for each department and then a comparison of Jobs at all levels is made and Jobs are given grade levels which define salary groups. The Job ranking method is easily understood by all employees and simple to administer, however it does have its disadvantages, this technique is not really suitable for large organizations with complex structures where its is much harder to gain familiarity with all of the Job roles. With this in mind it is probably not the solution that should be used at Mark it Down Co Ltd. Point Factor Method The point doctor method establishes Job values by assigning points to each area within a group of defined factors, below are some examples but there any many different factors that could be defined further and given points in order to be used or Job evaluation; Skill: Within this group there might be points available for, experience or training. Effort: The points available for effort might be divided between mental and physical effort. In this method each Job is rated using the defined points system. The points are totaled to form the final score for that particular role. From there Jobs are grouped into salary grades Cobs with similar points ratings would be placed together in the same salary grade) This method can be tailored to meet the needs of specific companies and is suitable for use within larger organizations where there are a large umber of Jobs to evaluate. Its an easy model to work with once its in place but can be very expensive and time consuming to develop in the first instance. In my opinion the point factor method would be a the better Job evaluation model to use for Mark it Down Co. Job ranking is Just too simplistic to cope with the amount of individuals roles at this organization. The factors I think should be used to develop the point system are as follows; Skill Experience, Training, Ability, Education Responsibilities Monetary, Supervisory, Reporting Effort Mental, Physical Environment Job Location, Hazards In order to establish if the employee in question has a case for querying the wage he is on in comparison to his colleague. His overall score for the above factors should be calculated in order to establish his pay bracket. If the pay grade is the same as that of his colleague then his concerns are Justified and his wage should be brought into line. If it is not and he is in a lower wage group then there is no case for a wage increase. Equally if the individuals wage bracket is determined to be higher than that of his colleagues then his wage should be adjusted to reflect as much.
