George Washington, The World’s Greatest Leader On April 30, 1789, George Washington took his oath of office as the first President of the United States. He knew that not only would he be faced with the challenge of leading a young nation with a plethora of problems, but that his every move and decision would be scrutinized and, hopefully, emulated by his successors. As the first of every thing (SP), in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent, he wrote James Madison, it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles. (George Washington). Not only was every decision a precedent, as stated in mountvernon.org: â€Å"in every turn America as a young country was in peril; every decision was layered with implications, competing passions, political pettiness, danger.† (Mount Vernon). Why did George Washington emerge as the most significant leader in the founding of the United States of America, even to the extent of being called the Father of the Country? The facts show us that he led the Continental Army to victory in the American Revolutionary War over what was at the time the world’s most powerful military. Later, as president, he guided the United States in its formative years. His leadership and vision established a foundation that would transform America from 13 loosely connected states into an unequalled economic and military superpower.
